Apple has partnered with A.R. Rahman to open two new Mac Labs at the latter’s KM Music Conservatory (KMMC) in Chennai, and the upcoming new campus in Mumbai, which will help students learn how to create music with Logic Pro X, Apple’s proprietary music creation app for macOS.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services, was in Mumbai to make the announcement. Alongside, Apple will also provide 10 full-time musical scholarships for students from underprivileged backgrounds.

“It’s an honour to be in Mumbai and I am humbled to be in the presence of the talented A.R. Cortana With Smart Replies Comes to Skype, Controls Smart Home Devices on Windows 10

Nikhil VyasApps, News0 Comments

Microsoft is adding new features to Cortana and integrating it with other services to find new use cases for its AI-powered virtual assistant and how customers can make the most out of it. To start, Skype now supports Cortana and lets users find answers to their queries without leaving the conversation.

Cortana will now offer in-context assistance to Skype users, the company announced this week. Among things that Cortana will come in handy for include ability to suggest useful information based on your chat. So for instance, if you’re talking about a movie, Cortana will suggest quick access to movie reviews.

Additionally, Cortana is also offering “smart replies”, a feature that understands the context of a message and suggests a handful of responses. Tap on the response and you’ve moved the conversation forward. Google recently introduced this feature in Gmail, and LinkedIn has offered a similar feature in its messaging feature for some time as well.

You can also use Cortana to organise your day. The AI-powered digital assistant will figure out when you’re talking about scheduling events, or things that you would like to set as reminders, and prompt you with quick options to save them.

But perhaps more importantly, Cortana is now also a contact on Skype, so you can talk to her in natural conversations and have your questions answered. The company says it has stayed to roll out the feature on Android and iOS in United States, and for now, there is no word on how soon we could expect these features to arrive in India.

Separately, Microsoft has quietly added a “connected home” section to Cortana on Windows 10 PC. The new option allows users to link their connected home devices and be able to control them from their computer itself. As of now, the feature supports smart home devices from Wink, Insteon, Nest, SmartThings, and Hue brands.

Chinese Smartphone Gaming Addict Suffers Loss of Vision in One Eye After 24-Hour Binge: Report

Nikhil VyasApps, Mobile, News0 Comments

A 21-year-old Chinese woman lost vision in one eye after playing video game on her smartphone for 24 hours, the media reported.

The unnamed gaming addict was reportedly playing the multiplayer online game Honor of Kings when she suddenly lost vision from her right eye, the South China Morning Post reported on Tuesday.

She was taken to the hospital and was diagnosed with Retinal Artery Occlusion (RAO) — a condition usually found in the elderly and rarely seen in the young.

However, in this case it was caused by eye strain from looking at the screen for too long without a break, the doctors said.

According to the woman, who works in finance, it was probably caused by playing the game for too long without a break.

The woman said she had become so obsessed with the game that she would play it after work and all day at weekends.

“On days when I have no work, I usually get up at 6am, eat breakfast and play until 4pm,” she was quoted as saying.

“Then I’ll eat something, have a nap and play until 1am,” she added.

“Sometimes I would be so absorbed in the game that I would forget to eat and not listen to my parents when they told me it’s time for dinner.”

She is still in the hospital as the doctors are trying to save her eyesight, the report said.

Honor of Kings, a historical battle game, has 200 million registered players in China alone and has been denounced for being too addictive.

While playing online games, one should take a break after every half an hour to mitigate the damage it will cause to eyesight, the doctors recommended.

Intel India Chief Says AI Will Not Cut Jobs, but Create Different Ones

Nikhil VyasNews, Technology0 Comments

Dismissing the argument that Artificial Intelligence would lead to job losses, a technology expert on Tuesday said it would in fact create different ones.

“Many people argue that with the advent of Artificial Intelligence, our people will lose jobs. No. I do not believe we will lose jobs, we will create different kind of jobs,” Nivruti Rai, Country Head, Intel India, said in Hyderabad.

Artificial Intelligence does jobs which are repetitive in nature, where humans tend to make mistakes, and also where a lot of memory is required, she said, speaking at an event jointly organised by FICCI and the Telangana government.

“Who will identify where can AI be leveraged? It’s us. But, that technology is absolutely critical, because everything that we do, use, wear is going to become smarter tomorrow and impact the lives, including our health,” she said.

Predicting that as many as 50 billion devices (like phones, smart TVs, smart refrigerators) would be connected by 2020, she said 5G would be essential technology to make it a reality.

“It is important because the amount of data that will be floating in the air tomorrow is going to be so much that your 4G LTE technology will fail,” she said.

It is important to re-skill oneself to rise above Artificial Intelligence rather than worrying about what AI will do, Rai said.

Noting that India is at the cusp of digital transformation, she wondered which other country can boast of the digital identity of more than one billion people stored with Aadhaar.

“We have all kinds of digital information…What we together collectively have to do, is to leverage this generation of digitisation and see how can we empower our citizens,” she said.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Nintendo Switch India Price Revealed

Nikhil VyasGaming, News0 Comments

The Nintendo Switch may not have an official India release, but Skyrim for the Nintendo Switch is and it has a price too. Local game store, Games the Shop has a listing for Bethesda’s open-world role-playing adventure along with a surprisingly steep Rs. 3,999 price. Skyrim for the Nintendo Switch has a November 17 release date.

In comparison, new Nintendo Switch games such as Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Cars 3: Driven to Win cost Rs. 3,499 and Rs. 2,499 respectively, making the Rs. 3,999 price for Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch outrageous to say the least.

Games The Shop is owned by E-xpress — India’s biggest distributor for video games. Skyrim for the Nintendo Switch is published by Bethesda known for the Elder Scrolls and Dishonored series of games. Bethesda games in India are distributed by E-xpress.

Incidentally, Doom for the Nintendo Switch which also published by Bethesda is also up for pre-order. No price has been given though it’s safe to say it would be the same – Rs. 4,000.

This isn’t the first time a distributor has made a game officially available in India for a console that hasn’t had a release through its manufacturer. We’ve seen this with the Nintendo DS and 3DS getting Pokemon games via Sunder Electronics and Nintendo Wii titles from E-xpress and the now defunct Milestone Interactive in the past.

Twitterrific for Mac Rises From the Dead, Now Available via App Store

Nikhil VyasApps, News0 Comments

Twitterrific, our favourite Twitter client on iOS, is back from the dead on macOS, as developer The Iconfactory has announced the availability of Twitterrific 5 via the Mac App Store. The launch delivers on the promise of February’s ‘Project Phoenix’ Kickstarter that touted the return of an updated Twitter client on the Mac, a venture that had found over 2,850 backers and raised over $100,000 on the crowd-funding site.

Twitter 5 for macOS comes with features you’d expect from a modern-day Twitter client for Mac like multi-account, multi-timeline support; support for Notification Centre and Retina displays; built-in sharing controls; full-screen mode; and, of course, a dark theme. The app can also sync your reading position with its iOS counterpart, which means you can continue where you left-off.

Like other third-party Twitter clients, Twitterrific promises a Twitter experience that’s without “promoted tweets” and “while you were away” tweets that can get pretty annoying. The one feature that the app is missing right now on macOS is the Today tab that we love on Twitterrific for iOS, and we hope that it gets added soon with an update.

Twitterrific was the first native Twitter client on macOS, and though a Mac version has been available all this while, its development fell behind its iOS counterpart. The Kickstarter project provided the developers an incentive to focus on the Mac version once again, and the result is Twitterrific 5, which is now available as a $19.99 (Rs. 1,600 in India) purchase via the Mac App Store.

Nvidia Unveils Pegasus, Its New 320-Teraflop Drive PX Chip for Fully Autonomous Vehicles

Nikhil VyasNews, Transportation0 Comments

Silicon Valley graphics chipmaker Nvidia unveiled on Tuesday the first computer chips for developing fully autonomous vehicles and said it had more than 25 customers working to build a new class of driverless cars, robotaxis and long-haul trucks.

Deutsche Post DHL Group, the world’s largest mail and logistics company, and ZF, a top automotive parts supplier, plan to deploy a fleet of autonomous delivery trucks based on the new chips, starting in 2019, Nvidia said.

The third generation of Nvidia’s Drive PX automotive line, code-named Pegasus, are chips the size of car licence plates with datacenter-class processing power.

They can handle 320 trillion operations per second, representing roughly a 13-fold increase over the calculating power of the current PX 2 class.

This dramatic improvement is a pre-condition for developing and testing future autonomous cars, experts said.

“Nvidia is one step ahead. But you can be sure you can expect (rival chipmakers) Intel, NXP and Bosch not to be too far behind,” said Luca De Ambroggi, principal automotive electronics analyst with industry market research firm IHS Markit.

Computer chip giant Intel and its Mobileye automotive unit are working with German carmaker BMW and US auto supplier Delphi on their own autonomous driving platform due out in 2021. NXP has agreed to be acquired by Qualcomm to form the world’s largest auto electronics supplier, while Bosch, the industry’s top auto supplier, is working with carmaker Daimler

Nvidia’s automotive director Danny Shapiro said in an interview that many of the first 25 customers using Pegasus chips would focus on robotaxis, which will be built without steering wheels or brakes and used only on dedicated routes. Bigger name automakers will announce vehicles running on Pegasus at their own product launches in coming months, he said.

Missing piece in driverless puzzle
The Pegasus line will be available by the middle of 2018 for automakers to begin developing vehicles and testing software algorithms needed to control future driverless cars, Nvidia executives told a developers’ conference in Munich on Tuesday.

A level 5 vehicle is capable of navigating roads without any driver input and in its purest form would have no steering wheel or brakes. A level 3 car still needs a steering wheel and a driver who can take over if the car encounters a problem, while level 4 promises driverless features in dedicated lanes.

The deal between Deutsche Post, ZF and Nvidia will include future Deutsche Post StreetScooter delivery trucks. In Munich, the three partners are showcasing a prototype StreetScooter running Nvidia Drive PX chips used to control sensors including six cameras, one radar and one lidar, or 3D laser camera.

Initial use cases will be for logistics vehicles on private roads within freight centres or for long-haul trucking in dedicated lanes, Shapiro said: “They are not replacing the drivers, but making the drivers more efficient and safer”.

For its current generation Drive PX2, Nvidia has said it has 225 customers, including car and truck makers, Tier 1 auto suppliers, high-definition mapping companies, start-ups and research institutions. These customers can make use of PX2-class software when they upgrade to Pegasus chips, Nvidia said.

These could encompass existing customers Tesla, including its latest Model 3. Others include Volkswagen’s Audi A8, the first car to use Level 3 semi-autonomous driving features, Toyota Motor’s next-generation autonomous cars and Geely’s Volvo business.

De Ambroggi said Nvidia’s Pegasus automotive chips were the first chips with the processing power for automakers to begin developing truly autonomous vehicles, which could be upgraded with software improvements ahead of actual roadway deployments.

But the analyst stressed that while such chips could find their way into mass-produced robotaxis running in defined lanes, these early fully-autonomous chips would likely only allow carmakers to develop prototypes ready for the driverless era.

Regulations, road-testing, nagging safety concerns – and questions about how power-intensive the new data-hungry chips will be – are likely to mean truly driverless cars for personal use won’t arrive until at least 2025, he said.

Microsoft Outlook Gets Calendaring, Scheduling Features on Android and iOS

Nikhil VyasApps, News0 Comments

Microsoft is bringing several calendaring and scheduling features to its email client Outlook on Androidand iOS platforms, it said, as the company puts efforts to better compete with Google’s Gmail and Inbox, and Apple’s Mail apps.

The first addition is “synced shared calendars,” which will enable users to view and edit shared Office 365 or calendars. Users will also be able to share the calendars they have created with others and accepting sharing invitations can be easily handled from the mobile app as well.

Microsoft says it is upgrading the existing shared calendars so that they start syncing with Outlook. Some users might not see this option on their phone just yet, in which case, Microsoft suggests them to wait a little. Alternatively, one can re-accept the sharing invitation from Outlook on iOS or Android to avail the new feature.

The Redmond-headquartered company is also making it easier for people to schedule other’s calendars. A user can now manage their delegates, accept a delegation request and assume full control over viewing and editing rights of delegated calendar from the Outlook on their Android phone or iPhone, the company said. Microsoft says it has taken extra measures to ensure that a user knows whether the meeting invitations or responses they are receiving are meant for them or their manager’s calendar.

Microsoft is also upgrading the event management feature, adding the ability to add and respond to events with different cadences (daily, weekly, monthly etc). It is also easier to keep a tab on a co-worker’s availability when scheduling meetings.

In addition to the aforementioned new features, Microsoft is also adding support for Meetup, a new Calendar app in Outlook. Microsoft already supports Facebook and Evernote in Outlook on mobile platforms.

Clash Royale Epic Quests Update Brings Touchdown Game Mode, New Rewards, and More

Nikhil VyasApps, Mobile, News0 Comments

Popular tower defence game Clash Royale just got a substantial update for iOS and Android. Called the Epic Quests update, it adds daily and weekly quests for epic rewards, a new game mode called Touchdown that removes towers from the game, and a revamped shop to name a few changes. It’s available for download now.

Dubbed as the “biggest update ever” to Clash Royale since its 2016 release, it brings balance tweaks to card decks, and chat and rematch options with 2v2 teammates too.

“The way we approach card balance in Clash Royale is a combination of playtesting, listening to the community and looking at the stats. You can expect regular balance updates to keep gameplay fine tuned and as fun as possible,” developer Supercell said in its blog. These include damage increases to cards like Tesla and decreases to hit speed on cards like Sparky.

The Clash Royale Epic Quests update will also see the removal of achievements from the game in the next update, Supercell said.

While the characters used for Clash Royale are similar to Clash of Clans, the gameplay is completely different. Clash Royale combines card games, tower defence, and multiplayer online battles, to offer a unique experience. You can check out our guide on how to crush your opponents in style in Clash Royale.

Nokia Plans to Cut Up to 310 Jobs in Technologies Unit, Halt Ozo VR Camera Development

Nikhil VyasNews, Telecom0 Comments

Nokia plans to reduce up to 310 jobs from its Nokia Technologies unit and halt development of its virtual reality camera Ozo and hardware, the Finnish company said on Tuesday.

The unit has about 1,090 employees and the potential cuts are expected to affect staff in Finland, the United States and Britain. Nokia employed about 102,000 employees as of end-June.

The unit will continue to focus on digital health and patent and brand licensing business, Nokia said.

“The slower-than-expected development of the VR market means that Nokia Technologies plans to reduce investments and focus more on technology licensing opportunities,” it said in a statement.

Nokia, whose main business is now telecoms network equipment, launched the camera last year as the first device for its digital media business, one of its new hopes for future growth.

It was designed for making 3D movies and games that can be watched and played with virtual reality headsets. Nokia cut the price of the camera by 25 percent to $45,000 later last year

Apple Watch Series 3 Connectivity Issues Fixed with watchOS 4.0.1 Update

Nikhil VyasNews, Wearables0 Comments

Apple has finally fixed the LTE connectivity issue reported by several Apple Watch Series 3 users. One of the biggest highlights of the Apple Watch Series 3 unveiled last month was LTE connectivity that would make sure that users do not depend on their iPhones for use. Apple Watch Series 3 users, however, complained about patchy connectivity as well as the Watch model 3 taking time to switch to cellular connectivity or at times failing to switch to cellular connectivity from Wi-Fi. Several reports even claimed that cellular connectivity issues were reported on the unit ahead of its September 22 rollout.

The new software update for the Apple Watch Series 3 models bumps the version to watchOS 4.0.1 and comes roughly a week after the watchOS 4 update was rolled out publicly. The new watchOS 4.0.1 update is now available to download through the Apple Watch app on the iPhone. Users will have to update via General > Software Update. Notably, the all-new watchOS 4.0.1 update is targeted for the Apple Watch Series 3 users.

The update notification says, “watchOS 4.0.1 fixes issues that in rare cases were causing Apple Watch to join unauthenticated (captive) Wi-Fi networks, such as those found in public places like coffee shops and hotels, which direct the user to a webpage before the network can be accessed.”

The Apple Watch Series 3 was made available for pre-orders starting mid-September and finally was available from September 22 in various countries including the US, the UK, Australia, Germany. The LTE model of Series 3 has been priced at $399 (roughly Rs. 25,500).

Facebook Now Lets You Directly Post Instagram Stories

Nikhil VyasNews, Social Networking0 Comments

After testing in Portugal last month, the option to syndicate Instagram Stories to Facebook Stories has now also appeared for US users.

Facebook has also confirmed that the feature is being officially rolled out for everyone around the world, TechCrunch reported on Friday.

“You now have the option to share your Instagram Stories to your Facebook Stories. We are always working to make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying.

While the option to post Facebook Stories to Instagram Stories has not come yet, the company said it might bring it in near future.

The new option would cut down the trouble of manually uploading Stories on each platform separately. Last month, Instagram had enabled the feature for users to view Stories on both mobile web and desktop.

Instagram Stories has garnered over 250 million monthly active users and the application has nearly 700 million users globally.

Microsoft Mixed Reality Arrives October 17, Headsets Now Up for Pre-Order

dalveer singhNews, Wearables0 Comments

At an event in San Francisco on Tuesday, Microsoft talked more about its ambition with mixed reality, giving us an availability date and pre-order info, a Halo mini-game, and an acquisition of a social app among other things.

Mixed reality headsets from the likes of AcerDellHPLenovo, and Samsung are now up for pre-order, with over 20,000 apps available to users on October 17, the launch day of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. These include Obduction and Dreams of Dali from InceptionVR, Space Pirate Trainer, Superhot, Arizona Sunshine, Luna, Skyworld, Move, Free the Night, Minecraft, and Fantastic Contraption.

On top of that, Microsoft has roped in 343 Industries to create a mixed reality Halo game in Halo Recruit, which serves as a “brief introduction into the world of Halo”. As with others, it’ll be available October 17. It’s not a full-scale new game by any means, but rather serves to market Microsoft’s mixed reality vision.

Microsoft has also been working with Valve to integrate SteamVR with its mixed reality headsets, and the company said that while developers were now getting access to see how their creations play out, consumers would need to wait till the US holiday period.

The social app that Microsoft has acquired is called AltSpace VR, which allows virtual reality users to join 3D chat rooms to attend meetups, comedy shows, yoga classes, and dance parties. Altspace had actually planned to shut down towards the end of July due to problems with funding but was saved by Microsoft a few weeks later.

Hotstar Further Discounts Annual Subscription to Rs. 696

dalveer singhEntertainment, News0 Comments

Hotstar is currently offering a one-year membership at Rs. 696 to new and returning users, as long as you don’t have an on-going subscription already. That’s more than 70 percent off on the usual price, given it costs Rs. 199 per month. It’s a massive incentive for those who have been holding out on the streaming service due to price.

The Rs. 696 offer comes just over a month since its previous discount, which offered the annual plan at Rs. 1,200 (50 percent off), and a 9-month plan at Rs. 999, which was geared towards football audiences.

Unlike those two offers, the new price cut is available to both credit and debit card users. We’ve reached out to Star India for comment on whether there’s an end date on the Rs. 696 plan, given the previous offers only ran for a limited time.

To avail the new offer, head to the Hotstar website and then click on the Premium tab. If you’re logged in with an account that has an on-going Hotstar subscription, you’ll need to cancel that and wait for it to run out before you can get on the Rs. 696 plan.

Hotstar isn’t offering any price cuts in the other two markets it currently operates in: the US and Canada. Users there will need to pay the standard $9.99 and CAD 12.99 to avail the content available to them.

With the Rs. 696 offer, Hotstar has gotten ever closer to Amazon Prime Video, which remains the cheapest of the lot in India at Rs. 499 for the full year. Of course, that’s set to change in the near future, with the Prime membership due to become Rs. 999, so it’ll be interesting to see if Amazon decides to compete on that front.

Netflix is obviously the most expensive, but that’s also reflective of the catalogue size. Hotstar is somewhere in the middle, though it’s now not the only one to dabble in both entertainment and live sports, given Amazon’s offering of American football.

Amazon Prime Membership’s Rs. 499 Introductory Offer to End Soon

dalveer singhInternet, News0 Comments

If you’re planning to get an Amazon Prime subscription in India, now would be a good time. The introductory price of Rs. 499 for the yearly Prime membership will be discontinued in the country in a few days, the company told Gadgets 360.

Amazon India said it would soon require customers to pay the full price – Rs. 999 – for the yearly subscription of Prime membership. The company didn’t share a specific date when the introductory offer will expire.

“Prime membership is available for only a few more days at the special introductory price of ₹ 499 ₹ 999 a year, an incredible value for members. Prime is designed to make your life better every single day. Tens of millions of members around the world enjoy the many benefits of Prime,” an Amazon spokesperson told Gadgets 360.

“In India, Prime members enjoy unlimited free 1 day and 2 day delivery on over 11 million products online, free standard delivery without minimum purchase, exclusive deals on bestselling products and instant access to latest movies and TV shows,” the spokesperson added.

The Indian arm of the e-commerce giant launched the Prime membership in India, which includes unlimited one-day and two-day delivery with no minimum order size, last year. The sticker price for the yearly subscription for Prime membership was Rs. 999 at the launch, but the company said customers who signed up early would be able to avail the yearly membership at Rs. 499. The company also offered customers access to Prime membership at no charge for 60 days.

That introductory price was never pulled by the company, even as it expanded Prime’s offering by including access to Prime Video on-demand streaming service. In India, and other places where Prime membership is available, Amazon said Prime Video will be offered in a bundle.

In other regions, Prime Video was available as a standalone feature at $2.99 or EUR 2.99 per month for the first six months after which the company would charge customers $5.99 a month. In June, Amazon told Gadgets 360 that it was extending the introductory offer for Prime Video in those regions till the end of the year.

Amazon is pulling the introductory offer in India as the company prepares to expand Prime’s offerings in the country. Gadgets 360 reported in August that the company was planning to launch the Echo Dot and Prime Music streaming service in the country this year. The launch could happen as soon as Diwali, people familiar with the matter told us.

Amazon’s aggressive bet on Prime membership has worked swiftly for it. Last Diwali, the company began to offer exclusive deals to Prime customers, a strategy that it has maintained in all sales since then. It has also lured customers to get the Prime subscription in the country by offering them cashback through Amazon Pay service. The company says Prime membership has grown by “over 2x” since January, and it has found that Prime customers tend to shop on Amazon more frequently than those customers who don’t have the membership.

Google Home Mini Spotted on Google Home App Ahead of Wednesday Launch

dalveer singhNews, TV0 Comments

Google’s much-anticipated Pixel 2Pixel 2 XL launch event is merely a day away, and we are expecting new hardware with the company’s “Made by Google” tag. The event’s biggest stars are likely to be the new Pixel smartphones, but apart from them, Google is also likely to launch new Chromebook – Pixelbook, mini variant of its Home smart speaker, and the next generation of Daydream VR headsets.

Now, a new report ‘seemingly’ confirms existence of Google Home Mini ahead of the official reveal. Android Police reports that a Twitter user named Raymond Durk, who reportedly lives two blocks away from the Google campus, spotted a new Google Home Mini in Google Home app. The new device was requesting for a setup which hints that a Google employee must be testing the device ahead of the official rollout.

Previous leaks have already suggested that Google is working on small-sized smart speaker likely to be called Google Home Mini. It is said to be priced at $49 (roughly Rs. 3,200) by the company.

A recent report also hinted that Google may be working on a high-end version of Home speaker with stereo sound. The new smart speaker was internally dubbed Google Home “Max” and was said to come with a single tweeter with dual mid-range drivers. As for looks, the new “Max” speakers are said to be premium in both design and build material. The speculations around the “Max” device, however, said that there’s no surety whether the “Max” smart speaker will be unveiled alongside other products at Wednesday event.

Google Assistant Is Coming to Chromebooks, Google Reveals Ahead of Wednesday Launch

dalveer singhLaptop, News0 Comments

Google is tightlipped about the products and the features of its new offerings that it will launch on Wednesday, October 4, but now a quiet listing on the Google Assistant app shows users could soon use company’s artificial intelligent (AI) virtual assistant in Chromebooks.

As per a report in 9to5Google, hidden quietly in Google Assistant app is a mention that some Assistant applications will work with Chromebooks. We were able to spot the same listing ourselves.

“Listed in the compatibility section of the Chat with your Assistant ‘game’ right alongside phones, Google Home, and Allo is Chromebooks, clear as day,” the report said.

This seems to be an indication that Assistant is definitely coming to Chrome OS and it could debut on the recently leaked Pixelbook. The new Chromebook is expected to launch on Wednesday, October 4, the same day Google is anticipated to launch the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, as well as the Google Home Mini speaker.

As per reports, the Pixelbook will be a high-end product in the category, just like the Chromebook Pixel. The Google Pixelbook will reportedly come with a pressure-sensitive stylus, called the Pixelbook Pen, and will be offered in three storage variants: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The 128GB storage variant has been tipped to be priced at $1,199 (roughly Rs. 77,200), while the 256GB and 512GB variants are expected to be priced at $1,399 (roughly Rs. 90,000), and $1,749 (roughly Rs. 1.12 lakhs) respectively by the company. Notably, the Pixelbook is said to fold into a tablet, which differentiates it from earlier Chromebook Pixel devices.

Google Photos Update Enables Users to Share Video Files Faster

dalveer singhApps, News0 Comments

Google has now released the version v3.6 of its Photos app for Android and with this update, the company has made video sharing much faster than before. In order to achieve this improvement, the Google Photos app essentially uploads a low-resolution copy of the video file, to enable faster sharing, and then later replaces this file with the high-resolution file.

The version v3.6 of the Google Photos app is already available for download on Google Play store and the changelog for the update says, “We’ve reduced the wait time for sharing videos in Google Photos by uploading low-res copies for sharing, and later replacing them with the high-res versions.”

To recall, the search giant introduced the similar technique for sharing images with its version v2.11 of the app back in March. With this update, Google Photos essentially created low-resolution previews of the images, when the device was on a slower connection. When moved into range of a better Internet connection, the high-resolution files of the same images are uploaded with the app.

Just earlier this month, Google introduced the cache feature that allows its Photos app to replay videos without using additional data. In order to enable this new feature, the Google Photos app started locally storing cache data of videos viewed by user, preventing them from wasting additional data to watch the same videos again. However, clearing up cache to free up some storage is always an option for those who already have their devices filled up with other applications and files

Google Must Improve Sales, Distribution for New Pixel Devices: Forrester

dalveer singhMobile, News0 Comments

As Google prepares to launch flagship devices Pixel 2and Pixel 2 XL, the new devices can only compete with the other premium Android handsets if Google invests further in improving sales and marketing, an expert said on Tuesday.

“Google’s positioning in the smartphone space is still unclear and there is a good reason for that: it can’t compete too directly with handset brands using Android in the high-end segment,” Thomas Husson, Vice President and Principal Analyst, Forrester, told IANS.

“I’d expect the new Pixel smartphones to showcase what is possible with Google’s latest software (like Oreo OS, Google Assistant, Google Lens). Despite acquisition of key HTC assets, Google still needs to invest billions of dollars on sales and marketing and to build a global distribution network, should it want to become a serious player in that game,” Husson added.

Google is expected to launch two Pixels – Pixel 2 and a larger Pixel 2 XL – on October 4 that would directly succeed Google’s existing line-up.

While Pixel 2 XL is rumoured to have a new bezel-less display design, the Pixel 2 might have a similar design to the original.

The devices are expected to house Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 System-on-Chip (SoC) and 4GB RAM.

“I think Google’s hardware move is more interesting when it comes to new form factors and post-smartphone experiences,” Husson said.

TRAI to Improve MySpeed App, Publish White Paper by Month-End

dalveer singhApps, News0 Comments

Telecom regulator TRAI plans to strengthen its MySpeed app, which measures mobile data speeds, and will also make its evaluation method more transparent after consultation with operators, its chairman R S Sharma said.

Some operators had complained about methods and results of the TRAI’s MySpeed app, and the regulator will soon come out with a white paper on underlying methodology and algorithms used by the said app for calculating data speeds of various service providers.

“We have also contacted Ookla and others. We are trying to understand what their methods are … We would like all stakeholders to sit together and come to a conclusion over most appropriate methodology,” the TRAI chairman said.

The regulator will also take suggestions from operators on the issue, he said.

“We will sit together with the operators and take their suggestions as what should be an agreed methodology so there are no such complaints,” Sharma said on the sidelines of the TRAI’s open house discussion on ‘data speed under wireless broadband plans’.

After strengthening the service quality norms for voice calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is now focusing its attention on benchmarks for data experience of consumers.

TRAI hopes to finalise, by month-end, views on parameters for measuring data speeds for wireless broadband.

“There were large number of quality of service (norms) for voice (offerings) like call drops. Data has recently started becoming prominent, and voice is now an application on top of data. So there is a need to have much better grip on the QoS in the data world,” he added.

Sharma said that both TRAI’s views on the data speed issue and its white paper on MySpeed app will be out by the month-end.

“Work on both the aspects will happen simultaneously,” he said.

While operators had previously stated that having a minimum guaranteed data speed would be difficult in the wireless world, TRAI is looking at suitable parameters, say average speed, that could serve as a benchmark.

In its consultation paper on wireless broadband data speeds, TRAI has also sought industry’s views on whether information on wireless broadband speeds currently being disclosed is enough for consumers to make informed choices.

It has asked if average speed can be specified by service providers. The consultation also touches on other related issues such as the need to revisit service quality parameters or existing benchmarks stipulated in the regulations.

WhatsApp Gets Its Own Set of Emojis, Looks a Lot Like Apple’s

dalveer singhApps, Mobile, News0 Comments

WhatsApp has introduced its own set of emojis that’s different from what we have seen so far. The new WhatsApp emojis are visible in latest beta version 2.17.363 for Android users, and are likely to be rolled out to more people in future.

Spotted first by Emojipedia, the new set may appear different from the Apple emoji set which was being used earlier by Facebook’s WhatsApp for iOS, Android, and Web. The new set, however, is heavily inspired by Apple’s emoji set. “It’s worth noting that this is only a beta, and these emojis might change before public release, or not even make a public release,” speculates Emojipedia.

As seen in image above, the new set of emoji introduced by WhatsApp stress on specific things and tries to be different from Apple’s set in minor way.

Considering the new set of emojis is currently available to beta users on Android, we can expect it to take some time to reach all Android users. Further, it can take more time reaching other platforms like iOS as well as Web. WhatsApp’s move to introduce new emojis takes inspirations from Facebook which brought its own set to the main app as well as Messenger.

Not too long ago, WhatsApp beta users on Android received granular control to clean up data consuming phone’s storage space. For those unaware, the feature was around on iPhones since January this year but made it to Android only now. Notably, the feature is yet to make it to regular WhatsApp users.

Vodafone-Idea Merger Said to Be Likely Completed by March

dalveer singhNews, Telecom0 Comments

Vodafone India and Idea Cellular merger deal is expected to be completed by March next year, as all regulatory approvals are likely to be obtained by that time, a source privy to the deal said.

“There are only two permission left in the amalgamation scheme of the Idea and Vodafone. It should be completed by end of the current financial year,” an industry source, who did not wish to be named, told PTI.

Emails sent to Vodafone and Idea did not elicit any response.

Both the companies are before National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for seeking its nod after which they will need final approval from the Department of Telecom.

Idea Cellular will hold a meeting of shareholders and creditors on October 12 to seek their approval for the amalgamation of Vodafone India‘s business with itself.

The meeting of equity shareholders, secured creditors and unsecured creditors will be held in Gandhinagar. It is being convened following directions of the NCLT bench at Ahmedabad.

Reliance Communications on Sunday announced termination of mobile business merger deal with Aircel due to “Legal and regulatory uncertainties, and various interventions by vested interests” leading to “inordinate delays in receipt of relevant approvals for the proposed transaction”.

Earlier this yearVodafone India and Idea Cellular had agreed to merge their operations to create the country’s largest telecom operator worth of more than $23 billion (roughly Rs. 1,51,153 crores) with a 35 percent market share.

The combined entity of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, which are currently India‘s number 2 and 3, respectively, would dislodge Bharti Airtel to counter the fierce price war in the world’s second-largest telecom market.

The deal gives Vodafone India an implied enterprise value of Rs. 82,800 crores and Idea Rs. 72,200 crores.

Post the transaction, the British firm will own 45.1 percent stake in the merged entity, while the Aditya Birla group, Ideas parent, will have 26 percent after paying Rs. 3,874 crores cash for a 4.9 percent stake.

The remaining 28.9 percent will be held by other shareholders.

Facebook Testing Facial Recognition for Account Recovery

dalveer singhNews, Social Networking0 Comments

Facebook is working on a facial recognition feature to help users secure the account and verify identity, reports said.

“We are testing a new feature for people who want to quickly and easily verify account ownership during the account recovery process. This optional feature is available only on devices you’ve already used to log in. It is another step that were taking to make sure account owners can confirm their identity,” Facebook told TechCrunch late Friday.

The social media giant has tried a number of methods to help users regain access to a locked account.

In certain cases it asks the user to identify photos of friends to verify designate several “trusted friends” who receive a code that can be asked from them to unlock the user’s account.

Reportedly, the company is also working towards rolling out a video chat device that can recognise users’ faces.

But the device has also raised fears among consumers that it could be used by the social network to spy on them, thereby casting doubt on whether the device would have all the features as intended when it is finally launched.

Codenamed Project Aloha, the device is set to be released by Facebook in May 2018

Xiaomi Says It Shipped More Than 10 Million Smartphones Last Month

dalveer singhMobile, News0 Comments

September was a big month for Xiaomi. The Chinese smartphone maker shipped more than 10 million smartphones last month across all the markets where it operates, Xiaomi’s chief executive officer Lei Jun said.

A thrilled and happy Jun, who shared the announcement, thanked employees and partners. The company also reached a major milestone in India. Roughly three years after entering the nation, Xiaomi’s vice president and India head Manu Kumar Jain said the company had shipped more than 25 million smartphones in the country.

The big jump in sales comes as people in South Asian countries including India begin to prepare for the festival season. In India, for instance, Amazon India and Flipkart have been cashing in on the festive season, giving customers lucrative discounts with sales past and sales to come. Xiaomi said last month it had sold more than one million handsets in just two days, a major improvement over its performance in the country last year, when it took 18 days to sell one million smartphones.

Even as Xiaomi has always been known as a company which plays very aggressively, offering some of the best hardware at the price point, the company has appeared more focused in the recent months. It recently launched the Mi Mix 2, a bezel-less smartphone, and Mi A1, its first Android One smartphone for markets like India.

The recent development will help the company better compete with Chinese smartphone maker Huawei, which recently posted better sales than Apple. The company shipped north of 73 million smartphones in the first two quarters of this year, averaging more than 12 million handset shipments in a month. According to marketing research firm Strategy Analytics, Huawei shipped 38.4 million handsets in Q2 2017, while Oppo shipped 29.5 million handsets. In comparison, Xiaomi had shipped 23.16 million handsets in the quarter that ended in June.

Google Makes ‘Family Link’ Parental Control App for Android Devices Available to Download

Nikhil VyasApps, News0 Comments

Google’s parental control app for Android devices ‘Family Link’ has completed the beta testing period and is now available to public to download for free in the US.

The app, which lets parents manage apps, set screen time limits and more, can be used from either an iOS or Android device, but is designed specifically to manage a child’s Android device, TechCrunch reported late on Thursday.

First introduced in March as an invite-only programme, the “Family Link” app lets parents block or approve app download and also track what apps are capturing their child’s attention by viewing weekly and monthly activity reports.

It also lets parents limit device usage by configuring a maximum number of hours per day the child is allowed to be on the device and when the device is to be automatically locked out for bedtime.

The software offers more features on Android as compared to iOS including a “Restrictions” section that’s focused more on what apps a child can use and lets configure privacy and other settings, the report added.

Apple does not offer a way for a parent to set time limits, remotely lock a device or view activity reports on app usage.

“Family Link” can control any Android device running Android Nougat 7.0 and higher and select Marshmallow devices. On the other hand, parent’s device only need to have Android KitKat 4.4 or higher or iOS 9 and higher.

Reliance Jio Says Digital Innovations Must Be Brought to Grassroots

Nikhil VyasNews, Telecom0 Comments

India has a unique opportunity to start a digital movement for employment, entrepreneurship and innovation at the grassroot level, a top Reliance Jio executive said in New Delhi on Friday.

Speaking on the concluding day of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2017 in New Delhi, Mathew Oommen, President of Network, Global Strategy and Service Development at Reliance Jio, said the country not only has the power to generate employment but also create innovation at the taluka level.

“Call it the Panchayati Raj of the digital age. There are endless possibilities for us. With programmes like Digital IndiaMake in India and Startup India, we can create opportunites for the last man in the queue,” Oommen told the gathering.

“The LTE to me is ‘Learn To Earn’ technology. It is a big paradigm shift that will happen and enable the digital empowerment and make a digital and secure India,” he added.

According to him, 2017 is the age of enhanced opportunity.

“With artificial intelligence (AR)virtual reality (VR), visual graphics, natural language processing and natural language thinking, the way we are doing business will surely change in months to come,” Oommen added.

Stressing on the need for an enhanced data security, he said the privacy and security of our nation and its every individual is the key responsibility today.

“We do not need anyone else to tell us how to do that. We are smart enough and we should have the infrastructure to do that,” the Reliance Jio executive said.

Nikhil VyasMobile, News0 Comments

Google Drive Integration Announced for iOS 11’s Files App

Nikhil VyasApps, News0 Comments

One of the most highlighted features of iOS 11 has been the Files app, which is a file manager. After Dropbox announced its integration last week, it was Google’s Drive turn to announce support. Google on Thursday announced “full integration of the Drive app with the Files app on devices running iOS 11.”

The Files app on iOS 11 lets users access files stored on the iPhone or iPad as well as on cloud storage services like iCloud Drive, Dropbox, and Drive, all in one place.

Google says that the new version of the Drive app will let users access and manage documents and photos stored in Drive just by opening up the Files app on iOS device. The latest Google Drive app version for iOS is now available on the App Store.

“If you have Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides apps installed as well, tapping on any Google document, spreadsheet, or presentation in the Files app will open the app of the associated Google editor. You can also take advantage of new iOS 11 features like dragging and dropping files between apps and folders in the Files App,” said Google in a blog post.

If some users are to be believed then the integration wasn’t entirely smooth unlike what Google seems to be claiming. MacRumors reports that users on Drive app for iOS previously were unable to use Microsoft Word documents and many other file types in Files app for iOS 11. MacRumors after independently checking on the error said that the issue was for real and was a Google Drive issue instead of Files or iCloud Drive. The issue, however, seems to be fixed with this update.
